Located in Delaware County, the 1.4-square-mile borough of Swarthmore is a small community distinguished by charming neighborhoods, a downtown core of unique shops and the campus of Swarthmore College.
Nearby communities include Springfield, Ridley and Nether Providence. Crum Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River, forms the western boundary.
Swarthmore was originally named Westdale in honor of the painter Benjamin West, one of the early residents of the town. The town changed its name after Swarthmore College was founded, in 1864.
In terms of transportation, Swarthmore Station provides rail service along SEPTA’s Media/Elwyn Line. The main highway is I-476. The town is about a 30-minute drive from Philadelphia.
Sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the Ogden House and the Benjamin West House.
