For homeowners in southeast Pennsylvania and the rest of the Delaware Valley, a water heater is essential for daily activities such as bathing, washing dishes, and laundry. But when it’s not working properly, it can severely disrupt your entire day.
Imagine starting off your morning with an ice-cold shower because your water heater isn’t working correctly, or worse, has stopped heating your water completely. An inefficient water heater is not only inconvenient, it can result in higher energy bills and decreased performance, affecting your wallet and your peace of mind.
Now that we’ve reminded you what an important role a properly functioning water heater plays, let’s look at what you can do to keep your water heater performing at its best.
To head off any problems, especially if you have hard water, it’s a wise idea to have our service technician flush out your hot water storage tank once a year. This procedure will remove sediment that has accumulated at the bottom of the tank. This sediment is created by the build-up of minerals in your water supply. The technician can also check the condition of the anode rod, which generally lasts from 3-5 years. It extends the life of your water heater by preventing corrosion from building up inside your tank.
Usually made of magnesium or aluminum, the anode rod does its job through a process called electrolysis. The metals in the anode rod attract ions that normally would cause rust in iron and steel. But instead, these ions latch on to the anode rod and as a result, cause it to degrade over time. Without the anode rod, your water heater could rust out in just a few years. That’s why it’s so important to replace the anode rod after it degrades.

A tankless water heater does not have an anode rod like storage water heater models, but it is still best to get annual maintenance done on your tankless water heater. One of the most important tasks is getting your tankless unit flushed to remove mineral deposits that have collected during the year. Left unchecked, a build-up of minerals can damage the heat exchanger in the unit, shortening its life span. Your tankless water heater also contains both an air filter and water filter that should be checked and cleaned regularly.
