Propane Safety: Before, During and After a Storm

Thunderstorms demand respect. They can be loud, disruptive, scary and of course, dangerous. We want to ensure that our propane customers know what to do to protect their home and their family in the event of a summer storm. Here are a few tips from The People You Can Trust at Wilson Oil and Propane.
Before the Storm
- Be aware of propane leaks. Even a small propane leak can be exacerbated by thunderstorm damage. Always be aware and if you catch a whiff of propane’s signature “rotten-egg” smell, know that you need to take action. We also recommend that you make your family aware of this smell too. - Be ready for an emergency. Make sure that all of the adults in your household know how to find the gas main at your propane tank—and that they know how to shut it off if necessary. This prevents dangerous, flammable leaks that could come from a damaged tank.
- If you have a propane generator, make sure you have enough fuel to see you through an extended power outage. If you want to install a generator, please contact us.
During the Storm
- Stay inside. During the storm, stay inside and away from power lines as well as any conductive metal objects. (This includes your propane tank!) If for some reason you have to go outside, do not go under trees, poles or other structures that could conduct electricity.
After the Storm
- Check the area. Once it’s safe, scour the area around your property for downed power lines, fallen trees or limbs, or other debris that could cause damage to your propane tank or gas line. Be on the lookout for anything that could threaten your family or home’s safety.
- Inspect your propane appliances. Take a careful look at your propane-powered appliances to check for any visible damage, then run them to check for malfunctions.
- DO NOT USE CANDLES when checking your propane equipment or appliances, A lit candle could ignite the propane if you have a leak.
