Environmental Benefits of Propane Autogas

Propane Autogas Vehicles Vs. Electric Vehicles

As a long-time propane provider in the Delaware Valley, we’re proud to provide a fuel that produces next-to-zero greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants, making it a cleaner-burning energy source. This American-made fuel can reliably and efficiently heat homes and water, as well as fuel multiple indoor and outdoor appliances. Yet, many people still don’t realize that propane can also be used as an alternative motor fuel, which is known as propane autogas.

According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, 60% of alternative-fuel vehicles nationwide now run on propane, from school buses to vans and fleet trucks to forklifts, lawnmowers and farm tractors. It is the third most popular vehicle fuel, next to gasoline and diesel.

Since propane has a lower carbon content, it burns cleaner and creates fewer toxic emissions. Converting a vehicle to propane can potentially reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 90%.

Wilson Oil and Propane is an environmentally conscious company, and that’s why we run most of our vehicle fleet on propane autogas. By doing this for years now, we have displaced tens of thousands of gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel, which produce far more emissions than propane autogas. We’ve also helped many businesses in the Delaware Valley go green by setting them up with a propane autogas dispensing station on their property or scheduling regular on-site fueling by our delivery trucks.

Propane Vs. Electric Vehicles

There has been a lot of talk about achieving net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050, and transitioning to all-electric vehicles has been a big part of the conversation because electricity is considered a “clean fuel” by many.

Although a battery-powered electric car itself doesn’t produce any emissions, the power plant that generates the electricity used to charge those batteries probably does. And those power plants are among the largest sources of greenhouse gas pollution in the United States. We’re a long way from getting our energy primarily from sources like wind and solar.

Other obstacles slowing the move toward electric vehicles include low supply, charging infrastructure challenges, expensive upfront costs, and limited mileage range.

Here’s an example. According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, it’s estimated that nearly 700,000 chargers will be needed nationwide just to accommodate the 1 million Class 4-8 medium- and heavy-duty Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) anticipated to be deployed by 2030. Those 700,000 chargers will consume 140,000 megawatts of electricity every day. That is the equivalent of the monthly energy needs of more than 100 million American homes!

Unfortunately, practical eco-friendly options like converting from gasoline and diesel engines to propane autogas have been virtually ignored by lawmakers.

Converting Engines to Propane Autogas

For fleet owners who want the cost benefits of propane autogas but need the flexibility of a gasoline backup or who aren’t ready to purchase new vehicles, EPA-certified bi-fuel conversion kits can be installed on existing vehicles.

You can count on propane refueling technology to deliver as dependably as the vehicles themselves. Refueling with propane autogas is quick, quiet and safe. It’s the same experience as refueling with diesel or gasoline, making the transition to propane autogas easy for fleets.

Propane autogas fleet operators can also save money by taking advantage of the Alternative Fuel Tax Credit, which was just one of the many components of the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress. You can qualify to claim a credit for every gasoline gallon equivalent of propane autogas purchased.
