If you use propane in your home, you’ll be glad to know you are relying on one of the most environmentally friendly energy sources.
For starters, propane is not toxic! It does not spill, pool, or leave a residue, which makes it harmless to soil or water in the event of a tank leak.
Propane also emits less than half the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity to produce the same amount of energy. That’s because more than 40% of the electricity used in our country is produced by coal-fired plants.
Propane also has a lower carbon content than fuel oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol – a big part of the reason it was added to the Clean Air Act as a clean fuel in 1990.
Propane is much more efficient than electricity when evaluating the total energy consumed (this includes the energy consumed in the extraction, production, processing and transportation of the fuel to the point of use). Based on this analysis, propane is 87% efficient; electricity is 32% efficient.
Here is one example. A tankless propane water heater can save more than $150 per year in energy costs compared with typical electric storage water heaters. Less energy used equals less environmental impact.
Additionally, if you are using a clean-burning, high-efficiency propane furnace, less than 10% of your fuel is wasted in the combustion process. In comparison, more than two-thirds of the energy used by a power plant to generate and transmit electricity is wasted.
There may come a day when, instead of filling your car’s tank with gasoline, you’ll “fill ‘er up” with propane autogas instead.
Propane autogas is already powering buses, street cleaners, police cars and other vehicles in cities around the world. Many businesses are also using propane to fuel their vehicles—including us.
We began converting our service fleet to run on autogas several years ago, and we are now converting our delivery fleet. We already have one autogas delivery truck on the road, and we will have two more on the road this fall. We now have more than a dozen vehicles in our fleet that run on propane.
Because of this, we have already displaced more than 20,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel.
Since propane has a lower carbon content than petroleum products, it burns cleaner and creates fewer toxic emissions. Some estimates are that converting a vehicle to propane can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent.
