Preparing for Severe Weather with Your Propane Generator

As recent events have made clear, Mother Nature can be unpredictable – and sometimes downright cruel. One of the best ways to protect yourself is to invest in a whole-house propane generator, which can help you avoid, or at least minimize, the potentially dangerous and costly consequences of severe weather. Of course, you’ll need to make sure your generator operates the way it should when you need it the most.
That’s why we recommend taking the time to prepare a readiness plan for your propane generator, including these steps:
- Review your generator’s operating instructions. Don’t wait until the storm arrives!
- Your standby generator should be ready to go at a moment’s notice – invest in a professional inspection to give you peace of mind.
- Severe weather usually gives you a few days of warning – use that time to run your standby generator to make sure everything is in working order and that you have enough propane gas to last at least a week.
- Have a backup plan in the event your generator does not start!
- During a storm, keep a clear pathway to your generator. Remove debris, especially near the fueling area.
- Record how long your generator has run after every time it is used for backup power.
- After a power outage is over, review what worked and what didn’t work and make necessary changes.
- Maintain your system – Annual maintenance is the key to making sure your generator – or any of your home heating or cooling appliances – is reliably performing at its best.
