How Long Do Central Air Systems Last?

Learn When It’s Time to Seek a Replacement

In our many decades of installing and servicing residential cooling systems for Delaware Valley residents, we’ve found that the average life span of a central air conditioning unit typically ranges between 10 to 15 years.

However, if you’re diligent about getting preventive maintenance done every year, your cooling equipment can continue keeping your home comfortable even longer than that. By the same token, neglecting proper maintenance can considerably shorten equipment life. We’ve also seen equipment shortened because the contractor who installed the system did not follow proper installation guidelines.

When to Replace Your Central A/C System

If you think you’re spending too much money on repairs or your electric costs keep climbing every summer, consider replacing your central a/c system. Although there are exceptions, the performance and reliability of central air equipment usually deteriorates after 15 years.

There’s no point in hanging onto a cooling system that can no longer provide you with top performance. Over time, federal energy requirements have led to major improvements in home comfort equipment.
The result has been dramatically higher efficiency ratings, much lower energy costs and minimal need for repairs. New cooling equipment also uses environmentally friendly refrigerant instead of the harmful and expensive R-22, which is no longer being manufactured.

A new high-efficiency system could cut your cooling costs by 30% or more—and eliminate the expense and annoyance of breakdowns—while keeping your home more comfortable, no matter how high the temperature soars.

After doing a new equipment installation for you, we offer all the same expertise and money-saving services that we give customers for their heating equipment —including service plans and annual tune-ups.

What Does an A/C Installation Look Like?

Many HVAC companies around here may call themselves air conditioning experts, but very few take the time and care to make sure that the equipment they install will keep homeowners comfortable for years to come while saving them money as well.

The first step in designing an effective cooling system is a thorough inspection of your home, including all of the rooms you need to cool. When we arrive, we will ask you about any comfort issues that bother you, and then we will begin a complete inspection of your current equipment, including key components and all ductwork.

Once we are thoroughly familiar with your present cooling system, and after we have determined your home comfort priorities, we will get to work identifying the perfect combination of equipment and installation. The system we design is the one that, in our professional opinion, will provide you with the highest level of comfort and efficiency.

We will then go about the installation process with as little disruption to your daily routine as possible. We will clean up after ourselves and return your home to you in the condition we found it. Every Wilson employee is totally committed to your comfort, and our goal is 100% customer satisfaction.
