How to Avoid Running Out of Home Heating Fuel

There are many ways we can help you stay safe and warm, no matter how cold and stormy it gets this winter. If you’ve already had your heating system checked and serviced this year, you’re off to a good start.
But as winter winds its way closer and closer to us, please remember these important tips to ensure timely deliveries and to keep your heating system operating safely and efficiently.
- If you call us to order fuel, make sure to check your heating oil or propane tank regularly—especially in the middle of a cold snap. You should call us before your fuel level gets too low. We recommend calling when your oil tank is about one-quarter full or when your propane gauge reaches 30%.
- Consider enrolling in automatic delivery to lower the chances of running out of fuel.
- If you get automatic deliveries, let us know if anything in your household has changed—such as extended visits from relatives, new appliances, etc.—that could affect your fuel consumption.

- After a storm, clear any snow or ice from your propane tank and its components. Inspect the outside air vents for appliances also to ensure there is no blockage. Use a broom (not a shovel) so you don’t cause any damage.
- Keep a clear path to your storage tank and clear your driveway after a storm so our driver can reach your tank. Our trucks need a space wide enough for an ambulance to get through.
- If you have an underground tank, plant a bright orange or yellow flag near it to allow our drivers to easily find your tank after it snows.
- If you ever smell gas, leave your home right away. Report the problem from another location as soon as possible. Read more propane safety tips.
- Keep the area around your heating system as clean and clutter-free as possible. Never store anything flammable near your system.
- If you have an oil or gas furnace, change or clean the air filter a few times during the heating season. A dirty filter compromises efficiency and can even result in a shutdown. If you have a steam boiler, check the water gauge periodically. Low water levels are a leading cause for boiler shutdowns.
