If you haven’t done so already, you should consider upgrading to a wireless smart thermostat. This lets you achieve better control over your heating system, whether it’s a furnace or a boiler.
This type of thermostat allows you to view and change temperature settings, check indoor humidity levels, and more, all from your smartphone. You can even receive alerts when you’re away from home to let you know if there has been a sudden or drastic change in temperature or humidity that could indicate an equipment breakdown. Doesn’t that sound a lot better than in the past when our only choice was to get up and manually adjust the temperature on the thermostat?
Wilson Oil and Propane sells and installs quality programmable thermostats that make keeping your home comfortable easy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, using your programmable thermostat correctly can cut your heating and cooling energy costs by as much as 10% a year! When you consider that heating and cooling accounts for approximately half of your home’s energy consumption and costs, you can see what a great investment a programmable thermostat can be!
Unfortunately, studies have shown that even when people have upgraded to a programable thermostat, about nine out of ten rarely or never programmed it because they’re not sure how to do it. That’s a shame, considering that managing the temperature of your home is one of the easiest ways to save energy and lower heating and cooling expenses.
If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, getting one will bring you both convenience and savings. wise move: When used correctly, it will pay for itself in just a short time. If you go beyond a basic programmable thermostat and opt for a Wi-Fi smart thermostat, you can control your home’s temperature from your smartphone.
Once you get your wireless remote smart thermostat installed, you register it online. This enables you to access it from any location. If you’re away from home, you can use your smartphone to adjust the temperature setting so your home is at the perfect temperature when you arrive.
Some models will do all the work for you. You simply adjust temperatures to your comfort and over the next few days your thermostat will “remember” the temperatures you like and build a schedule based on your patterns.
Internet-enabled thermostats can also send you an email or text alert about a drastic temperature change—and possible equipment failure. Some models can let you know when it’s time to change filters or schedule system maintenance.
To achieve an optimum balance of comfort and savings, the U.S Department of Energy suggests the following temperature settings for your home thermostat
For the cold weather months, when you’re home and awake, set the thermostat at 68°F. Then program a lower temperature of about 60° for the hours you’re asleep or out of the house.
For the warm weather months, when you’re home and awake, program your air conditioning system to 78°F. Then program the A/C to shut off during the hours you’re out of the house.
You can also program your thermostat to return the temperature settings to normal comfort levels 20 to 30 minutes before you come home.
The lower the interior temperature, the slower the heat loss, according to Energy.gov. So, the longer your house stays at the lower temperature, the more energy you save, because your house has lost less energy than it would have at the higher temperature.
The same concept applies to raising your thermostat setting in the summer — a higher temperature inside your home will slow heat gain into your house, saving you energy and money on air conditioning costs.
