Most people call us when they discover their heat is off, and on a cold winter night, that’s understandable. But sometimes there’s a simple fix you can do yourself that will get your heat going quickly and save you the expense of a service visit. Here are a few steps to take for both oil and gas systems.

If you have an oil-fired system:

If you have a gas-fired system:

Since gas systems don’t use fuel storage tanks, there is obviously no need to look at fuel level.

Most heating systems have electronic ignition systems, which are more reliable than traditional pilot lights. When an electronic ignition switch fails, the heating system will not ignite. Dust and dirt in the area along with dirty air filters can also cause the switch to fail. Faulty control boards and faulty safety switches are also responsible for the failure to ignite.
