Why Changing Your HVAC Filter Is Important

With proper maintenance your HVAC system can last as long as 12 to 15 years. A simple way to make sure your system can keep your home at a comfortable temperature year round is to changing your HVAC filters as often as the manufacturer recommends. Although it may seem excessive, to improve your home’s indoor airy quality and increase the efficiency and life-span of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, it’s critical to replace the air filter once every three months. But do you know why?

Here’s what a dirty air filter can do to your home and to the system itself:

• With a clogged air filter, there’s less room for air to flow through your system and through your home. Your HVAC system will need to work harder to circulate air throughout your home which will result in an increase in your energy bills. Your home will be less comfortable and the air quality will suffer.
• A dirty air filter can cause your cooling coil to freeze up inside your air conditioner because it’s working so hard just to cool the air inside your home. A frozen coil can be a very costly repair which can often be prevented by changing the air filter.
• A really dirty air filter (not changing it for months) can cause your HVAC system to work so hard that it can cause premature wear and tear on parts that can lead to a total breakdown and loss of heating or cooling flow. This will then require a call to an HVAC professional for a servicing that will end up being much more costly than the price of a new air filter.
