Your HVAC System and Indoor Air Quality

Posted: August 24, 2020

Your HVAC system plays a big role in keeping you safe and healthy in your home. In fact, your heating and cooling equipment can have a significant impact on your overall indoor air quality.

Here are some ways to keep your HVAC system running properly and efficiently. By doing so, you’ll improve the air that you breathe at home.

  • Replace air filters – Air filters are your HVAC system’s first line of defense against most microorganisms, including bacteria, pollen and other particulates in your indoor air. Check your furnace or A/C filter at least once during the heating and cooling season. Follow manufacturer’s filter cleaning and maintenance instructions to minimize exposure to impurities.

Be sure to use the right filter for your equipment – consult your owner’s manual to find the range of filters that is right for your heating or cooling system. If you need help figuring out which filter works best for your needs, contact us.

  • Get regular maintenance – Ideally, your heating and cooling system systems should be both be serviced once a year to ensure it is operating safely and efficiently. A properly maintained heating or cooling system will remove most harmful contaminants from your indoor air.
  • Clean/seal air ducts – Like your air conditioner, furnace, or heat pump, your ventilation system also needs regular maintenance. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), air ducts should be professionally cleaned every three to five years – more frequently if you have pets. We also recommend our Aeroseal duct-sealing service. If you have duct leaks, you will experience reduced indoor air quality, including excessive dust and allergens. Read about our Aeroseal service.
  • Fix problems immediately – A properly functioning air conditioner, boiler, furnace or heat pump is essential to the health and safety of your family – especially if you have people with chronic conditions living in your home. If there’s a problem with your heating or cooling system, take care of it quickly by calling us.

We can also improve your indoor air quality by installing products like HEPA filters, ultraviolet-light air purifiers, humidifiers and ventilators. Read more about our indoor air quality solutions.
