Why Your System May Not Be Keeping You Warm

In our last blog, we took a close look at poor insulation as one of the reasons people had trouble getting their homes warm enough during the numbing cold wave at the beginning of winter. This time, we’ll explore another reason for chilly homes: a flawed heating system.

Over the years, many people who joined us as customers have discovered that they didn’t have to replace their entire heating (or cooling) system to feel more comfortable and save money on energy costs. They just needed to call us in so we could do a complete evaluation of their equipment and then correct flaws that we uncovered.

What causes flaws in your heating system

Energy-efficiency ratings for heating and cooling systems are calculated in a laboratory setting. But when those systems get installed in a home, those efficiency ratings can drop drastically if the contractor you hire does not install the system according to manufacturer specifications.

Additionally, failure by the homeowner to maintain their equipment properly (as instructed by the manufacturer) can reduce energy efficiency levels further.

In fact, a study of over 1,000 homes across the country showed that consumers were short-changed on energy efficiency because of a combination of poor equipment installation and lax maintenance.*

After adjustments were made to correct problems, efficiency improved, on average, by a phenomenal 36%! This was accomplished by:

  • cleaning and adjusting the system
  • correcting installation flaws, including the ductwork
  • sealing the ductwork to prevent air leaks; ask us about our Aeroseal service!
  • improving other areas of the home where air leaks caused significant energy losses (that brings us back to insulation).

If you feel your system isn’t working properly or you think you’re spending too much on heating (or cooling), please contact us and we’ll be glad to evaluate both your equipment and your home.

A few fixes may just save you money on heat or air conditioning and keep you more comfortable for many years to come!
