Energy Savings

Fall is on the way – and with it comes your heating bills.

Want to keep those bills as low as possible? Try these energy saving tips.

  1. Take advantage of the greenhouse effect – Keep curtains open on sun-facing windows to warm rooms during the day, then close curtains at night to reduce heat loss.
  2. Install a programmable thermostat – A programmable thermostat makes it easy to control temperatures and reduce your energy use. When you’re asleep or not home, dial your thermostat back five to seven degrees and you’ll save about 10 percent on your annual heating bills.
  3. Weatherize! – More than 20 percent of the warm air produced by your furnace or boiler can escape through air leaks under windows and doors, around plumbing penetrations and chimneys, and in other places throughout your home – including your ductwork. If you want to identify key problem areas for air leaks and other issues in your home, strongly consider a Wilson Home Performance Evaluation.
  4. Service your heating systems – An annual tune-up keeps your heating system running at peak efficiency and reduces the likelihood of repairs. Annual preventative maintenance is included in all of Wilson’s high-value service plans.
  5. Cover drafty windows – When winter sets in, tape a heavy-duty clear plastic sheet or film inside your window frames. Seal the plastic tightly to the frame to help reduce drafts. Use tight fitting insulating drapes or shades on windows in your living room and bedroom.
